What does a Passive Fire Technician do?

As a fire protection installer, you will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of fire protection systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repairs to fire resistant walls and ceiling linings

  • Reinstating thermal and acoustic insulation, fire seals, cavity barriers and fire-resistant ducting

  • Using access equipment such as ladders

  • Following technical drawings and plans

  • Adhering to strict health and safety guidelines.

  • Reinstating multiple service penetrations, through fire separations including HVAC , Plumbing, electrical, hydraulic and ELU Cabling

Skills

Skills required – skills we have train and support if you done have them but want to learn

  • Ability to follow technical drawings

  • Ability to use your initiative

  • Knowledge of buildings and construction

  • Good level of physical fitness

  • Confidence to work at height.

Apprenticeship

You could complete an apprenticeship to become a fire protection installer.

New Zealand Certificate in Fixed Fire Protection Systems (Level 3)

The purpose of this entry-level qualification is to provide the Fire Protection industry with installers and fitters who have the skills and knowledge to install fixed fire protection systems hardware.

Graduates will work under limited supervision and in accordance with the New Zealand Building Code, current Standards, regulations and ordinances, and other internationally accepted standards.

This qualification may lead to the:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Fixed Fire Protection Systems (Level 4) with an optional strand in Special Hazards Fixed Fire Protection Systems [Ref: 2577]

or

  • New Zealand Certificate in Fire Protection Systems Technology (Inspections) (Level 4) with strands in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, and Fixed Fire Protection Systems
